Artistic director celebrates 19 years with Without Frills

Artistic director of the Alpha Theatrical Dance Company Beverley-Ann Ottley is celebrating 19 years in theatre with the production Without Frills, at the Naparima Bowl, today and tomorrow. Ottley’s fondness for dance started at the age of three. She was exposed to formal training in ballet from age five and modern dance, two years later, with the grand dame of dance Joyce Kirton. Her passion for the art form has transcended to the development of the youths who fall under her tutelage. Her children Dainelle and Jor-el make up the 50-strong members of her dance school, located in Palmiste, south Trinidad.
Ottley says being a single mother for most of her children’s upbringing was tough, as she had to juggle work in Port-of -Spain, tertiary level studies and the day-to-day running of the dance school, leading up to annual performances.
The most rewarding part of it all for Ottley is to see her dancers grow in skill and develop the same love that she has for dance. Over the years the group has performed in Grenada, Venezuela and Washington DC and participated in workshops at the famous Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Manhattan. The Alpha Theatrical Dance Company has also performed for numerous organisations and NGOs. For more information call 794-9282.
