Richmond Street Boys’ Steelband shines in Hollywood

Richmond Street Boys’ Steelband performs at the 16th Annual World Championships of Performing Arts last month in Hollywood, California.

 

Richmond Street Boys’ Steelband and Fire in the South tassa group from Iere High School represented T&T at the 16th Annual World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) last month in Hollywood, California. Scholarships were awarded to Nicholas Bhagwandeen and  Joseph Lewis to attend the North Hollywood Millennium School for Dance. Nicholas won one gold medal and was the overall winner for hip hop dance, while Joseph performed in various categories including a duet with Natalia Lewis in dance and instrumental. Joseph was also a recipient of a scholarship to New York Conservatory school for Film and Television, winning one gold, six silver and three bronze medals.
 
 
The event kicked off with the Parade of Nations, with the T&T team portraying 2012 Word and Associates (Catholic Band) The book of Exodus presentation. The team was awarded a plaque for Best Costume together with Malaysia and Russia. P Lee Keith, the national director for T&T received an award for Outstanding National Director. The T&T team was among competitors from 47 countries.
