Before Toco native Keshorn Walcott copped gold in the javelin throw at the 2012 London Olympics, veteran calypsonian Winston Scarborough (De Fosto) said he was tracking his career. In the aftermath of his victory, he quickly penned a tribute-We Toco Golden Boy. The song was arranged by Mt Lambert-based Leston Paul. To date, he has sung it for T&T's 50th jubilee celebrations at Woodford Square, Port-of-Spain, and Queen's Park Oval, Port-of-Spain. Interviewed on Wednesday, Scarborough said, "The inspiration came before, when Anil Roberts gave him the javelin. I think he gave him about three javelins. But when he grasped this particular javelin, I?felt like this looking like gold." Scarborough monitored the situation. "I?said I?would wait and see how events unfolded. When I?looked at the buildup in England I?said this looking like it could happen. I?was frightened thinking he could break world records."?
It was fait accompli. It was an auspicious day for T&T when he copped the Olympic gold medal with a result of 84.58 metres, beating Ukraine's Oleksandr Pyatnytsa and Finland's Antti Ruuskanen. It meant Walcott had become the youngest Olympic champion in javelin throw and the second non-European to win the Olympic gold in men's javelin throw since Cy Young in Helsinki in 1952. Scarborough had an epiphany on August 11. "When he threw, it was so powerful the song unfolded right there in front of me. I?reached for my guitar and began strumming. I?was singing it when crowds rushed to Piarco to greet him. I was so proud of him and the other boys. I?could have released it before but I?waited 'till he came to Trinidad.?"The musical arrangement was awesome. When I?released the song it started to gain momentum. I felt good for T&T and our twin-island state. I?was proud for all the athletes who represented T&T."?
He had ample reason to celebrate since Walcott is a three-time winner in the Under-20 javelin throw at the Carifta Games, setting a new North, Central American and Caribbean Junior record in 2012. He improved this record on May 27, 2012 with 80.11 m in Havana. Scarborough was swayed by the euphoria sweeping T&T. He is optimistic about being given an opportunity to serenade Walcott in patriotic song. He said,?"I?am certain he would like it. It would inspire more confidence in him to do great things. He would be a force to be reckoned with."?He said he hoped the Government would make good use of the song.
Congrats to Chucky
Scarborough also extended congratulations to 2012 Independence Monarch Roderick "Chucky" Gordon for the stellar song Bear With Me. "Chucky has done well. I?know his father (Roland)?would have been proud of his boy."?
