Now that the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Independence are over, the nation now focuses on the 36th anniversary of Trinidad and Tobago becoming a Republic in 1976. Although there may not be much fanfare for this momentous occasion on September 24 as there was over the lowering of the Union Jack and subsequent raising of the Red, White and Black, there will be events marking the occasion. One such event is, in fact, celebrating the nation's republicanism as well as the music of a calypsonian whose work has, throughout his career, made significant contributions towards the advancement of Trinbago-from before Independence to the present.
On September 22, Spektakula Promotions will present at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (Napa), Port-of-Spain, Thank You Sparrow, in tribute to the Calypso King of the World. More than simply a concert, this event will be a musical production incorporating elements of drama, dance and more. In keeping with that air of royalty that revolves around Mighty Sparrow, specially selected guest artistes will also be performing. Among the supporting artistes is the first woman to have won the National Calypso Monarch title as well as the National Road March title, Calypso Rose. The first triple-crown winner and proclaimed King of Soca, David Rudder, will also come in from Canada where he now lives, to deliver a concert performance.
The reigning National Independence Calypso Monarch, Roderick "Chucky" Gordon will perform his winning song, Bear With Me, along with other hits he's had over the years. Legendary pannist Len "Boogsie" Sharpe is also on the cast, as well as the Sweet Soca Man, the Baron. Rounding out the lineup are Nadia Batson, Jeunes Agape and the Malick Folk Performers. Of course, Spektakula promises one or more surprises in store for patrons on the night of this show that will not offer any repeats. Patrons will also be treated to some of the most popular calypsoes from the Mighty Sparrow, from his 1956 debut, Jean and Dinah, to his most recent hits.
