The backline costumes for Rugeri’s Carnival in Rio section.

Carnival in Rio
C2K13 is certainly up and running. With over a dozen mas bands already launched, soca tunes already in rotation and steelbands trying out possible Panorama selections, Carnival action is already frenzied. Just last Thursday, world acclaimed designer Heather Jones launched her section—Celebrity Weddings—in Paparazzi Carnival C2K13 presentation, at the band’s camp on Murray Street, Woodbrook. Last Saturday evening, Rugeri Promotions launched its presentation for Carnival 2013—“Carnival in Rio”—from Trini Revellers’ C2K13 presentation of “Brazil Brazil.”

Held at the Rookery Nook, Maraval residence of George Wilcox, the launch was well attended with all in attendance having a ball, and partying until late that night. The section was designed by Jennifer Mackintosh. “Carnival in Rio” is Rugeri’s eighth offering for Carnival, having started back in 2006 with “Anthony and Cleopatra.” Registration for 2013 is already in full swing and masqueraders can visit the Rugeri website (http://www.rugeripromotions.com) for more details. Brazil Brazil will be launched on Sunday, at Windsor Road, Valsayn. However, before this, tomorrow, Genesis will unveil its C2K13 presentation—Mirror—at Chaconia Hotel, Saddle Road, Maraval.

Ash Wednesday pan cooldown
A prominent show promoter has hit on a novel idea to further elevate and enhance the status of pan in the country. Ash Wednesday Pan Cooldown is the name of the project and it will showcase every winner in steelband competition for C2K13. Chaguaramas is earmarked as the venue for this unique February 13 exposition of pan and steelbands will be encouraged to man booths and display sites. From these pannists can sell memorabilia, handicraft and other items. The promoter said special facilties will also be constructed to allow pan manufacturers to merchadise the national instrument.

Gypsy goes country
Once a calypsonian always a calypsonian and Gypsy (Winston Peters) is no different. Having recently participated in the Tuco North Zone 50th anniversary of Independence celebrations at Queen’s Hall, the Mayaro MP has released a new single. Recorded in the US, the single is in a Country n Western, socarised styling and it’s all about affairs of the heart. Prior to getting into calypso, Gypsy did a number of Country n Western songs and, outside of reigning supreme in the extempore genre of calypso, has preference for this brand of song.
