Coco Dance Festival, the largest annual contemporary dance festival in the English-speaking Caribbean, will host its fourth installment at the Little Carib Theatre from October 11 to 14. The festival, hosted by the Contemporary Choreographers' Collective, offers performance support for choreographers working in unconventional ways in T&T by providing the space to present their work. In addition to showcasing the work of established local choreographers, such as Bridgette Wilson and Anika Marcelle and newcomers such as Megan Navarro, the festival also highlights the work of tertiary-level dance communities at the University of the West Indies and the University of Trinidad and Tobago. The international guest work will be a solo by Jacob Cino, a Canadian choreographer. On Saturday, there will also be a free performance by Continuum Dance Project at Medulla Gallery before the Little Carib mainstage performances.
This year, Coco will also present Coco Awards, which recognise the work of people working in the contemporary dance field as well as people who support it. "We hope to make this an annual event of the festival," says Sonja Dumas, one of the Coco directors. "There are so many people to thank for their contribution to the development of dance in Trinidad and Tobago. We would like this to be an ongoing platform for recognition and appreciation for the dance community." The awards will be held on October 11, the first night of the festival. Tickets for all nights are $150. For more information, visit the Facebook page Coco Dance Festival.
