Singing pop/rock songs like Believe You Can and 10 80 miles, The Flick ensemble placed second in the finals held at Space La Nouba nightclub, San Fernando, on September 2. The Mousetrap emerged champions. As a double whammy, The Flick claimed the coveted People's Choice award at Anchorage, Chaguaramas, on September 24. They are gearing up for a special concert on October 20, at Little Carib Theatre, White Street, Woodbrook. Apart from their upbeat music, The Flick ensemble came in for kudos since they epitomise youth engaged in positive activity. On October 7, they entertained patrons attending a country-styled harvest at Maracas RC School.
Interviewed on Wednesday, manager Noel Aming, son of veteran masman/bandleader Neville Aming, said he was bent on encouraging adolescents to develop their musical abilities. Aming was accompanied by co-ordinator Michael Roberts and guitarist Daniel Roberts, 15. Daniel is a Fourth Form student at Fatima College, Mucurapo. They were drawn from other schools like Bishop's, Trinity, St Joseph's Convent, Port-of-Spain and Providence Girls'.
Aming said, "The band comprises 13 to 16-year-olds. They are attending school. So I?have to be cognisant of that when they practice. They practice at Glencoe and Fatima College. The fact they are in school means I?have to choose proper venues for them to perform. We gravitate to more community and church events. I just want to encourage them to do something positive with their lives. They are young and they can go places.?They have natural talent."?
Aming added, "They compose most of the songs in their repertoire. My job is to help them polish the performances. I help them with the vocals. I?help in the blending of the voices." Zeroing on the imminent concert, lead guitarist Roberts said their fans can expect "more modern songs." Patting himself on the back, he said, "We compose our own songs like Last Forever and Can't Stop. We are still working on our signature song."
He thanked his mother Lisa, a guitarist at St Finbar's RC Church, for inculcating a love of performing within him. "I would help her out by playing the guitar. I even sang songs like Hosanna."?
Meanwhile, the senior Roberts assists in transporting equipment and enforcing discipline. "I?have to keep them in check. I feed them. They have voracious appetites," he said. The Flick is working assiduously on a CD which should hit the music stores by November. "By then we should have a signature song. I?told them you can identify 3 Canal with Blue. ?Shadow Has Poverty. Stalin has Sundar Wey the Song. Otis Redding has Sittin on the Dock of the Bay."
