String festival channels positive energy
“Positive Energy With Strings Attached” is the catchphrase of Court Street Chamber Orchestra’s National String Festival. The festival began in 2001 as a means of encouraging young string instrumentalists to showcase their talents and reward their efforts in the years that there was no National Biennual Music Festival.
The intent: to create an event where the players could meet and encourage each other. Court Street Chamber Orchestra is a non-profit organisation that has been assisting the nation’s youth and adults in learning music since 1992. On many occasions the orchestra sponsors music lessons for those who can’t afford them, assisting in Royal School of Music/Trinity Guildhall fees, as well as partial assistance for some of our alumni to study abroad.
On April 3 and 4, T&T’s string instrumentalists are invited to demonstrate their talent and skill in a friendly competition for trophies and cash prizes, according to age divisions and instrument categories. Winners will perform in the Grand Concert on April 6, at The National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA), South Campus, San Fernando.
Featured this year as adjudicators and performers, are the world-class String Faculty of UTT, Jonathan Storer (concertmaster); Eleanor Rya (violin); Simon Brown (viola); Caitlyn Kamminga (double bass)—and special guest cellist from Washington DC, Tobias Werner.
In addition, a New American school of string-playing will be debuted from the O’Connor Method, an inspiring selection will be performed by a collaboration of players from Court Street Chamber Orchestra, UTT, and gifted T&T youth.
Patrons will be able to experience the beauty of live string music from American fiddle styles, local calypsoes and classical elegance by local and international performers. Musicians are invited to sign up for auditions, scheduled to close March 20. Concert tickets are available now.
