Reigning Power Soca and Road March king Austin "SuperBlue" Lyons is proving he is back to stay.Yesterday, Lyons launched his single, Borough Day, a pan tune arranged by Len "Boogsie" Sharpe, which was specifically written for the Point Fortin Borough Day celebrations, which begins today.
During the launch at Software Technology Ltd in St James, Lyons, who wore his signature colour–blue, down to a matching earring and watch, said he was just giving back to the place where he was born and bred with this latest offering."Right now I am attempting to go to Point Fortin to give back to them what they have given to me–all the love in my heart is for them," Lyons said.
He said he was also launching his J'Ouvert band, Water and Powder, which he described as one of the largest J'Ouvert bands to ever be witnessed. A staging of the band will also be seen at the celebrations.Lyons' manager, Gregory Fernandes, said Point Fortin mayor Clyde Paul has declared May 3 as "SuperBlue Day" in the borough. The day will see a family affair with the entire Lyons clan expected to be present, as well as close friends and family.
He said in 2014, a major SuperBlue concert will also be hosted and he is confident the public will be very pleased with what they will see.The Road March prize will also be presented to Lyons on May 4, the final day of the celebrations.
Serious about soca
Lyons said he was very serious about taking soca music to a "higher heights," and now that he is back, soca lovers can expect to hear a lot more music from him throughout the year.He said he is soon to release another single titled School Reunion Party–a tribute to a former pre-school teacher from the community in which he was raised.
Lyons will also open the Jazz Festival in Tobago this weekend, singing with his own band–SuperBlue and the Love Band.He said he believes soca music, if marketed properly, has the potential and power to curb crime and other social ills in T&T."We have one of the best festivals in the world–Carnival. All other festivals calling themselves carnivals are nothing compared to what we have. Carnival is a noun, an adjective, a verb, expressed through us," he said.
"You can't call every festival a carnival, those festivals are governed by laws of a parade, from point A to point B. But in T&T Carnival vehicles are replaced by people."He said he may not live to see it happen, but he is certain soca music will receive a Grammy. It must and it will, he added.
