The admission fee of just $50 was a definite steal of a deal for the amount of music served on the night. Caribbean Night, held at De Nu Pub (The Mas Camp) in Woodbrook on April 19, billed as a birthday celebration for the late Lord Kitchener, Roy Cape, Carl Jacobs and Tony Voisin, turned out to be a musical feast, mainly because of a number of impromptu performances.
Headlined by Pelham Goddard & Roots, featuring vocalists Moricia Cagan and husband Nigel O'Connor, and David Bereaux, the show's first half served as a warm-up for things to come in its second stanza.
The Roots playlist included an overture of David Rudder hits, Sugar Bum Bum, Permission to mash up the place, La Vida, Talk, Calypso Rising, Wanna Make Love, She's Royal, Get Up and Dance, Song for a Lonely Soul and Swing.
Intermission taken and with several calypso fans, including former government minister Arnold Piggott, entertainers Kees Dieffenthaller, Duane O'Connor, Carol and Trini Jacobs and Olatunji, Keith Subero, Mervyn Telfer, Diane Dupres, Beverly Smart, Diane Holdip, radio broadcaster John Benoit, and Kalypso Revue director Wilton Howell, in attendance, the second half opened with a cover of Lord Nelson's Disco Daddy. It was after the performance of Calypso Music, Soca Rhumba, Carnival Baby and Rock Away that the action became more heated.
Dieffenthaller was plucked out of the standing audience to do a Kitch song and he obliged, opting for Bees Melody.
O'Connor volunteered to do another (The Road), followed by Kitchener's daughter Quweina Roberts, in attendance with her mother Valerie Green-Roberts.
With everyone singing her father's songs, Quweina decided to render a Carl & Carol ditty–From Now On–and was joined by Trini Jacobs. Obviously in a singing mood, she asked Goddard to remain on stage in the band's chorus line for the remainder of the second set which included Bacchanal Lady, Party and a Calypso Rose medley of Tempo and Fire.
Also in the second half, two patrons won hampers singing a verse and chorus of two Kitchener songs. David Bereaux's Tribute to Kitchener consisted of three numbers.
Thinking that the show had ended, with Roots playing SuperBlue's Party, as patrons began making their way out of the venue, they were summoned back as the 2013 International Power Soca/Road March champion told his co-manager Charles Oliver he wished to do an impromptu performance.
His 30-minute performance was the icing on the cake as it comprised many of his hits, dating back to 1980.
The next edition of Caribbean Night will be staged on May 2.
