Some of the best young calypsonians will be on show on Wednesday when De Nu Pub (The Mas Camp) stages its weekly live calypso showcase. Of the five singers billed, two have been crowned National Calypso Monarchs, while three have made it to the semifinal of the competition.
Wednesday's show is headlined by 2011 monarch Karene Asche and 2012 monarch Duane O'Connor. The daughter of popular singer Errol Asche, Karene copped the coveted title singing Uncle Jack and Be Careful what you ask for. A police officer by profession, O'Connor, who is also a Young Kings monarch, got his crown singing The Hunt Is On. Both singers are superb entertainers and crowd-pleasers
Also in the line-up are Kalypso Revue's Devon Seale, his tent colleague Michelle Henry, and Klassic Ruso's find of C2K13 Helon Francis. As he has done each year of his singing career, Seale again won himself encores this year for his thought-provoking Game Show Politics. Not to be outdone, Henry, small in physique but powerful in voice, and also a police officer, also got numerous recalls this season singing Blind Man Bluff, a well-crafted ditty on the Section 34 issue, and Silent Echoes, a lament on the demise of the Divine Echoes aggregation of which she was a member. A winner of the Arouca monarch competition, Francis was also a semifinalist in the 50th Anniversary of Independence Monarch competition. His song this year was a much acclaimed social commentary titled Tainted Legacy. (PRB)
Showtime is 8.30 pm, and musical accompaniment will be Len Cummings & De Wailers.
