The Jazz Alliance of T&T (JATT), in collaboration with LiveArt Bistro, Port-of-Spain, Dutch singer and flautist Francine van Dam as she presents an evening of the music of Carlos Jobim, one of Brazil's finest composers. She will be accompanied by the Sean Thomas Trio. The two-nights only event is scheduled for the Emancipation weekend, August 2-3 at LiveArt Bistro, 5 Albion Street, Port-of-Spain.
The Dutch musician will also conduct a workshop for instrumentalists and vocalists at LiveArt Bistro on August 3, from 4-6.30 pm, focusing on improvisation, vocal technique, stage presence, and other aspects of stage performance.
A flautist and singer from Amsterdam, van Dam has lived and performed in Cura�ao, where she participated with her own Tumba-composition in the Carnival festival. It is an old dream of hers to participate in T&T Carnival.
A graduate of the Jazz Conservatory of Hilversum, the Netherlands, van Dam has been performing Latin and Jazz music ever since her first tour in 1986 to France with her jazz quartet. After several years of performing with a variety of own bands and combos, she took her Afro Caribbean All Stars band to South Africa in 2002. She says, "nowadays, I like the encounter with other musicians around the world. We all speak the same language, so I really prefer to come in and work with musicians on the spot."
Apart from performing, van Dam also composes, paints and coaches on both individual and corporate levels. She was recently a policy-developer for Kunstfactor, Dutch National Institute for Amateur Arts.
