Diatonic Pan Institute's fourth annual Steel in Motion 2014 competition will be dedicated to Calypso Rose (McCartha Linda Sandy-Lewis).The competition, will be held on May 10, on the streets of Siparia, to coincide with the annual Siparia Fete.Seventeen traditional bands have been invited to perform at the event. Each band will be required to perform tunes from Calypso Rose's repertoire. Diatonic general secretary Janelle Parris said judging will be based on a Calypso Rose tune of choice, plus a religious song done in calypso tempo, in keeping with the religious aspect of Siparia Fete.
Parris explained, "Siparia Fete is an annual community festival built around the celebration of the mysterious appearance of the patron Saint La Divina Pastora. This festival attracted nationwide participation primarily because of the ancillary activities organised on the occasion of the festival."However, she said, "Since the advent of the annual Point Fortin Borough Day celebrations in the early 1990s, which happens about the same time, Siparia Fete experienced a significant decline in patronage to the detriment of the community."In 2011, Diatonic Pan Institute, a registered NGO and CBO, staged a Pan on the Move competition which successfully revived the flagging festival. Calypso Rose will also be honoured for her contribution to steelpan music during the festival.
