The Illusionist which is screened today as part of the European Film Festival (EFF) was described by one of the UK's leading film critics, Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian, as "utterly distinctive and beguiling."Sylvain Chomet's classically conceived, hand-drawn animation tells the story of a once-celebrated stage magician, Tatischeff who sees his fame dry up in Paris in the late 1950s. He packs up his belongings–including an ill-tempered white rabbit–and heads to London to find work. His fortunes continue to flounder, until one night a drunken party patron invites him to a remote Scottish island. Here he meets Alice, an orphaned young woman. Their ensuing adventures together change both their lives forever. The EFF runs until May 27 at MovieTowne Port-of-Spain and MovieTowne Tobago. Tickets for all screenings are $30 each, with tickets for children and students (in uniform or with student ID) priced at $20.
