On August 27, 3Canal unveiled their brand new show, More Love, at their "new" venue–the upgraded backyard space at 33 Murray Street in Woodbrook.
This weekend, fans will have another opportunity to catch More Love in an extended run. More Love combines dance and theatre with 3Canal's signature brand of conscious rapso music, resulting in a show that is political, timely, energetic and entertaining.
The show is dark, with its emblematic logo a black heart, worn on t-shirts of the cast. It features new and old material that hits at the heart of the matter of life in T&T, focusing on difficult topics such as crime, corruption and social strife–but throughout a message of love and positivity endures. An army of backup dancers support the singers through most of the numbers. Their moves are urban yet natural, with an organic choreography that lends drama and urgency (though perhaps they might be used a bit more sparingly to greater effect). More Love also serves up some devastating political satire, with Cecilia Salazar back in the role of government leader, Mamala, as she addresses her subjects and leads her inept team.
The Black Box space is newly paved and painted, with proper lights, sound and seating–but they've kept their iconic Bar Canal sign. The effect is a sharp, new, intimate theatre space that allows audiences to experience productions up close. Patrons who have attended previous shows at the Murray Street location will approve of the upgrade. It makes a welcome addition to the short list of performance spaces in Port-of-Spain.
