Tobago's Signal Hill Alumni Choir (Shac) will celebrate its 30th anniversary with two gala shows on October 25-26. Joining the celebrated group will be The Lydians, Marionettes Chorale, Bank Notes Choir, and Pedro "Timmy" Lezama. Both concerts will be held at Central Bank Auditorium, St Vincent Street, Port-of-Spain.
Founded in 1984, Shac is now deemed a cultural institution and icon of T&T. Shac evolved from the Signal Hill Senior Comprehensive School Folk Choir, which dominated the Folk category of the T&T Music Festival in 1982 and emerged as National Junior Folk champion.
In 1984 Shac captured the National Folk Championship award at the music festival.
The choir is directed by John Arnold, one of its founders, who is assisted by Georgina Peterkin, choreographer.
Shac dominated the National Music Festival during the 1980s and retired from this competition in 1990 after winning the Calypso Chorale, a new class.
The group also won the first Music Festival of the new millennium and, in 2002, was acclaimed Most Outstanding Adult Choir and Most Outstanding School Choir.
The choir has performed for many world dignitaries including Queen Elizabeth II and Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa.
Shac has also performed at several international choral festivals including the UN Assembly Hall in New York in 2012 with six other international choirs. The choir recently repeated its UN Assembly Hall repertoire in July, but this time in Geneva, Switzerland.
