Not unexpectedly, 16-year-old Aaliyah Lewis, a magnificent young dancer who many believe is destined for superstardom, won the 14th edition of Talent Expression 2014 Final. The leading talent competition in the Southland, organised by the Southern Marines Steelband Foundation, was held on November 16, at the Southern Marines Pan Palais, Marabella.
Lewis led from preliminaries to finals and was joined for the lead in the semifinal by vocalist Jerelle Hurdle who placed fourth in the final, singing Crossroads. What was a bit surprising is how close Clint Davis, aka Baby Blue, came to winning the competition with his exciting presentation replete with Moko Jumbies. Singing Fantastic Friday, he came within one point of Lewis. Rachel Dieffenthaller, the fast rising teenage pan player placed third, singing Volare.
A definite cause for satisfaction was that there were six teenagers and one pre-teen among the 12 finalists. Particularly noteworthy was that the four acts that featured pan were all in that age category. The 12 finalists qualified for money prizes as did those who copped the first three places in the preliminaries and the semifinals. There were also five special prizes.
