Carnival 2015 may be over but activity in the arts fraternity continues unabated from this evening until the end of the month.
With Kurt Allen's Backayard Tent having its gala finale at 7.30 pm at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) in Port-of-Spain, two theatrical productions are being premiered. Keensdee Productions premieres Talk Tent 2015, featuring Paul Keens Douglas, David Berreaux, Short Pants, Miguel Browne, Felix Edinborough, Farida Chapman, Roy & Gloria and Neisha Julia Guy, at Queen's Hall, St Ann's, at 8 pm.
At Central Bank Auditorium at lower St Vincent Street, Funny Farm Factory Productions, in collaboration with 3Hah Theatre Company, will premiere XXX-posed (Who Vex Lorse!), starring Nikki Crosby, Penelope Spencer, Debra Boucaud Mason, Leslie Ann Lavine, Abeo Jackson, Kearn Samuel and Conrad Parris, at 8.30 pm.
The two plays will be repeated tomorrow night but the day's big show is the annual Champs of Steel Plus being staged by Pan Trinbago at Queen's Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, at 8 pm. Headliners are the winners in the various National Panorama categories in both senior and junior competitions; senior and junior Kings and Queens of Carnival; and, the Junior Band of the Year winner Play One For Cito produced by Rosalind Gabriel.
Special guest is the mas presentation of K2K Alliance & Partners' M3 (Millennia Three) The Long Walk From Home.
Also making the playbill are some of the season's champions and contenders including the National Calypso Monarch Roderick "Chucky" Gordon, second runner-up Karene Asche and Junior Calypso Monarch Aaron Duncan.
Some of the biggest names representing the International Power and Groovy Soca Monarch competitions will be featured such as Ricardo "Vagabond" Drue.
Kelly Greene & Harmony will provide musical accompaniment.
Champs of Steel Plus, originally called Champs in Concert, has been a fixture in the Carnival calendar since 1980, provides a fitting end to the celebrations. This show prides itself in the tradition of always having the National Anthem played minutes before the start of its scheduled programme.
Billed as the biggest cultural event this weekend, the University of the West Indies' Classic Concert 2015: The Caribbean Man–A Tribute to Black Stalin, will be held on Sunday at the Hyatt Regency, Wrightson Road, Port-of-Spain, at 6 pm.
The concert is being held as a tribute to Black Stalin (Leroy Calliste) and among its performers, each performing one song, are Roy Cape, and the Roy Cape All Stars. Other artists include David Rudder, Mungal Patasar, Raymond Ramnarine, Explainer, Kurt Alleyne, Destra Garcia, Olatunji Yearwood, Blaxx, Kees, Nigel Rojas, Machel Montano and Len "Boogsie" Sharpe.
There will be even more calypso on Sunday evening when TUCO holds We Eh Done Yet 2 Carnival Tabanca boat cruise on the Coral Vision, Water Taxi jetty (behind Breakfast Shed), Wrightson Road, Port-of-Spain, at 6 pm.
Other Sunday action includes YMG Productions staging its Annual World Laugh Festival at National Academy for the Performing Arts (SAPA), cnr Todd Street and Rienzi-Kirton Highway, San Fernando, at 6 pm. The show stars Sprangalang, Tommy Joseph, Damion Melville, Dr Pee Wee, Peter Joseph, foreign-based Susan Kennedy and Bobby Smith and many more.
The theatre season continues to be in full gear next week Thursday when Raymond Choo Kong Productions premieres Party Done for the Freak Next Door at Queen's Hall, St Ann's, at 8.30 pm. This play stars Raymond Choo Kong, Cecilia Salazar, Arnold "Peenie" Goindhan, Carolyn Taylor, Kevon Brooks and Trevon C Jugmohan.
