As I write on this page devoted to women writers, I think it apt that India is referred to as “she”, especially today at the end of the first day of the Jaipur Literature Festival. Two festival directors are women–Faith Singh and Namita Gokhale–who worked with William Dalrymple and Sanjoy Roy of Teamwork Arts to make it one of the most famous literary events globally.

Imagine what it would be like if people said exactly how they felt, what they thought, and what they wanted. One could argue that it would be mean and downright selfish to openly confess to feelings that people always appear too afraid to express. On the other hand, one could also argue that being entirely honest at all times could make things easier across the board for all involved.

Following the tragic death of a Japanese tourist Asami Nagakiya after Trinidad Carnival 2016, along with the subsequent hurtful and sexist comments made by the then mayor about the woman’s attire, a national dialogue was sparked on the issue of gender-based violence in T&T. Every Carnival, women are subjected to the constant flow of inane commentary and advances of men, which, when met with rejection, foster defensiveness or backlash.

Beautiful ladies shine in the latest outfits for Carnival 2024, from short to long dresses in all colours and styles, rompers, short pants, bikini tops and fashionable skirts. Completing their ensemble were various trendy shoes, make-up and hairstyles. Prestige Allure, hosted by Presentation College San Fernando on January 21 at Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba, was the event that brought out this exquisite bunch of ladies. Performing that night were Nailah Blackman and Patrice Roberts, known for their flair and style on stage. Other performers included Raymond Ramnarine and Dil-E-Nadan, Problem Child, Skinny Fabulous and Mical Teja, and Kes.

Chutney took the spotlight at the John Cupid Carnival Village, Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, last Thursday, as a cast of past and present chutney soca artistes graced the stage.
