The group of conscious and active champions/persons for the earth, known as Earth Champion, has a motto that incites Trinidad and Tobago youths to clean up the environment.
The Motto: We All Have A Right, A Clean Environment. We Also Have A Responsibility To Keep It Clean.
Earth Champions is a project of the Create Future Good Group, which is an organisation that promotes children's rights through artistic and creative programmes. Earth Champions focuses on developing initiatives to restore our planet to proper health, through small manageable projects such as recycling in schools, homes and offices. By changing small habits, participants can change the world. Earth Champion's target market is children 18 and under because they believe these targets can affect change in a great way, other than governments and adults.
This non-profit organisation intends to become self sustaining by having some of the more passionate environmentalists in the student body run it. "I came up with the name Earth Champion, after holding focus groups with children in secondary schools, because they seemed passionate about doing something for their environment," said Nadella Riley, children's rights activist and founder of CREATEFUTUREGOOD. "We want them to find creative ways and solutions for solving their own refuse problems at school, to generate funds to keep it going, and even offer our services to the private and public sector. "There is a competitive aspect to their involvement in anything secondary schools are involved in. So the plan is to make them 'heroes', by celebrating the good work they do, hence the champion aspect to the group," Riley added.
To boost awareness of the organisation and its plight, Earth Champion will be having its first demonstration with the hope that it will kick start recycling in a dynamic way in schools. The demonstration which is themed 'Bring your rubbish and come', will be held on Wednesday 13th April, 2011, at the Queens Park Savannah. This is the official launch of the Earth Champions movement in schools across the Caribbean! At 12 noon everyone will be required to form a ring around the Memorial Park, showing just how much recyclable waste their school generated in one week. Participants are asked to wear old white t-shirts, with an Eco friendly or Eco-conscious message on it, a recycled placard, and the items collected for recycling.
With an active Facebook page and a membership that is swiftly increasing, Earth Champions believes that from cleaning up refuse and recycling, there can be financial gain, as well as saving the earth amongst other things.
