"Somebody bandit meh phone and meh money while I was travellin' home." Far too often school children are plagued by the unwanted pests of society, more generally referred to as "Bandits". These common criminals flock lonely street corners to prey on vulnerable boys and girls travelling to and from school. Using an assortment of methods, such as gun-point, knife-point, and even by throwing a fist, these thieves have been able to successfully rob students and take their personal belongings.
How can you prevent this from happening? Just learn from the experience of others. Many students have experienced such ill-fated incidents and they have an abundance of advice to give, so one can avoid the danger that can be met while travelling home. Tips to avoid getting held-up include:
TRAVEL IN GROUPS. Large groups can often deter thieves as it is more difficult to confront a crowd of people as opposed to a single person.
WALK WITH CONFIDENCE. This includes knowing your surroundings, as this conveys a greater sense of purpose. Persons who are hesitant and unknowing are more likely to be targeted.
AVOID LONELY ROUTES. Taking the busy main road instead of the lonely backstreet can prevent one from being cornered into an unlucky situation. One must be sure of the route chosen.
DON'T BE FLASHY. Displaying your expensive accessories or electronic items, while one is travelling can lead to unwanted attention, and an increased risk of being held-up.
BE AWARE OF STRANGERS. This includes not giving your personal information to someone you don't know and not accepting rides from an unfamiliar person.
KEEP YOUR HANDS FREE. Try to travel only with what you need. Having your hands free allows you to more readily defend yourself.
DON'T GET DISTRACTED. Avoid talking on your cellular phone and having other distractions while walking, as this provides an opportunity for you to be attacked unknowingly.
It is also wise to keep in mind, in the event of being followed, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service advises you to "cross the street, move to the nearest group of people or shout for help".Nevertheless, travelling home is a healthy and environmentally friendly way to get from school to your home and vice versa. However, one must always remember to keep safety in mind.
