The students of Naparima Girls’ High School are currently involved in the RBC Young Leaders Project. The theme for the year 2011-2012 is Climate Change: Global Phenomenon; Community Solutions. Our project entitled, the ‘No Idling Zone’ involves reducing carbon emissions on our school compound as well as effecting positive changes in the behaviours and attitudes of our students and parents and by extension the wider community. Idling can be defined as the running of a vehicle’s engine when the vehicle is not in motion. Generally, the effects of idling affect the environment and the health of individuals.

The No Idling Zone on the Naparima Girls’ High School compound is an attempt to reduce our carbon footprint. Research conducted on our school compound revealed that between the hours of 2pm to 2:40pm a high number of vehicles were found to be idling thereby releasing unnecessary toxic emissions. This revelation was the catalyst for our RBC group in developing the No Idling Zone policy. We are encouraging parents and guardians to switch off their engines while awaiting school’s dismissal. This action can make a huge impact on ourselves and our society. We wish to sensitise the public at large on our project this year as well as to encourage them to join our No Idling policy. Remember, ‘It’s a cool scene, switch off the engines and keep it green’. We strongly believe that if every citizen of Trinidad and Tobago could take the time to put into practice our No Idling Zone project, in effect we can ensure environmental sustainability.

AN ENVIRONMENTAL PLEA

Listen, listen to what we have to say
Just this time if no other
You feel lil’ “chirren” cyah tell you what to do
So why bother?
But we, we want to change the world
So we can have it a little longer.
Turn off yuh engine while yuh parked
You know how much gas you wastin’
Ah mean, is none of our business,
But is your precious money dat you burnin’
An’ at d’ same time,
Is our beautiful Mother Earth dat you murderin’!
Ah know yuh have to stay cool,
But all dat A/C is unnecessary!
For you to stay cool
You sacrificing everyone globally.
Come on people,
Let’s think about this, seriously.
Think of the long term price mankind will have to pay,
See Mother Nature’s cries to heal her someway
And when you come to your senses,
Pass on the message
End Idling NOW.
End It TODAY.
