The Prime Minister's Best Village Trophy Competition of the Ministry of Community Development will host its annual Food and Folk Fair at the Queen's Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain on May 6, from 9 am. The theme for this year is One Family, One Nation, Preserving Our Heritage, Celebrating Our 50th Anniversary of Independence. Minister of Community Development Nizam Baksh will attend and deliver the feature address at the formal opening of the Fair, which promises to be a day of fun for the entire family. A release this week stated that the objective is to bring together the people of T&T, to showcase our indigenous traditions and creativity through local foods, local craft and indigenous performances, while encouraging the creativity of our people in their cuisine, craft and artistic talent.
Some of the activities at this year's Food and Folk Fair include:
• A Handicraft Village with displays of Carnival Art, Leather Craft, Needle Craft and Indigenous Craft.
• A Children's Village with games including London Bridge, Hopscotch, Moral, Marble Pitching, Storytelling, Face Painting and a Folk House featuring Papa Bois, Lagahoo and La Diablesse.
• Competitions of the Day including Best Male and Female in national wear, Miss Folk Fair, Lil Miss Indefest, Best Decorated Booth, Menu of the Day and Drumology.
• Steelband Time featuring two single pan bands, four conventional bands including PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars, BP Renegades and Witco Desperadoes, two Tassa groups and two Rhythm Sections.
• National/Patriotic Song Competition.
• Folk Dance Competition and Folk Fashion Show.
• Tasty Local Dishes from the Villages.
• There will also be special performances from National Calypso Monarch 2012 Duane O'Connor; National Chutney Soca Monarch KI Persad; Junior Soca/Calypso Monarch Aaron Duncan;
National Humorous Calypso Monarch Myron B; plus Benjai and Black Stalin, among others.
