It is said that creativity comes in all forms and fashions and young entrepreneurs Alisha Brizan-Sturge and her brother Joshua Brizan have definitely proven this. The siblings have pooled their creativity to enter the niche market of gourmet cupcakes. Their business, called ‘DiDi’s Cupcakeria’, offers a wide variety of gourmet cupcakes ranging from the simply elegant to the most bizarre. Alisha mostly takes care of the baking while Joshua, a photographer, is responsible for the promotion. Most may recall that a Trinidadian brother and sister team won ‘Cupcake Wars’ but long before this, there was interest in cupcake making here in Trinidad and Tobago that began with our exposure to the Food Network. As a result, many have been flocking to DiDi’s Cupcakeria since its opening in April of 2012.

Asked why they decided to open such a business, Alisha told gieMAGAZINE, “I came up with the concept for DiDi’s because baking has always been a passion of mine and I wanted others to have fresh, gourmet cupcakes with a difference. There is a certain joy you get from creating new ideas and actually seeing and tasting the end product.”
The word gourmet is usually used to describe fine food or drink and at DiDi’s, Alisha promises “fine cupcakes”. So what can one expect when visiting the Cupcakeria? Well, there are the usual Oreo stuffed cupcakes, but I dare you to try the Maple Bacon Cupcake. Yes, you heard me right! Bacon! When asked about the odd combination, Alisha wasted no time in describing the cupcake’s unique grouping:

“It’s like having all the flavours of a French toast and bacon breakfast. A hint of nutmeg along with a little salt is usually tasted from the bacon. It’s perfectly blended to create a heavenly sensation in your mouth. As a matter of fact it is the best cupcake on my creative list.” There is also a Chai cupcake that is similar to a cup of tea and for those who are even more adventurous, there are the Guinness cupcakes which are sweet, yet still very masculine. “Some of the flavours may be really weird sounding, but they all are very amazing,” Alisha insisted. These cupcakes not only sound attractive, but they also look attractive. “Very soon we will be expanding and getting into pastries so customers can expect greater gourmet items to come.”

Joshua Brizan, who is a photographer for gieMAGAZINE, expressed that he is very proud of his sister and did not imagine that there was a niche for such gourmet items in Trinidad and Tobago. He assured, “The cupcakes are scrumptious, and creates a lasting taste bud memory that you would never forget”. As I took a sample out of the box, I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised. They really are as good as they look, bursting with flavour and sinful beyond thought. When asked about the calorie count, Alisha said that everything should be eaten in moderation. Each cupcake can hold about 140-400 calories” she stated and assured customers that mini cupcakes of their creations will soon be available. So what is their recipe for success? The siblings disclosed: “Prayer, Passion and Persistence are the key words that we follow. Mix that in with determination and hard work and success will definitely come!” You can check out Didi’s Cupcakeria at the following URL: www.fb.com/didiscupcake
