Why do you do the things you presently do? Are you simply going with the flow? If you are, is it specifically because everyone else, or someone close to you appeared to have a great time doing what you were not accustomed to and you just had to join in? Let US go deeper. We must constantly ask ourselves and take time to consider 'Who or what entices us?' and 'Who or what is our main influence?' Going against 'the in thing' or what may be deemed 'popular momentum' requires a greater than average resolve. It requires one to always weigh the outcome of one's actions BEFORE taking those actions. If we're prone to blindly reacting to our easily influenced feelings and emotions, we could be following or unknowingly leading others down a wide road or down a path of sometimes irreversible consequences. Yes, a road or a path of no return. It doesn't necessarily mean that every wrong step or start condemns us to be lost; but we don't ever want to put ourselves on a course that leads to overwhelming or unnecessary pain. Our lives are much too precious! We can't be like the plants that just go as the breeze blows. Imagine what would happen if the breeze is suddenly stronger than 'the roots' that hold us? Where would we end up after the storms of life? We must have some deep inert values, which ensure that when the negative situations or temptations come, we stand up wisely for what's right and honourable. Other people's opinions must never be the sole reason why we do what we do. Remember, our reputation is as a consequence of mainly our actions and others' opinions which we have no control over, but we determine our character. Be mindful that either way; people will have an opinion. Being easily shaken or negatively influenced is based on our convictions or what has been instilled in us.
Our popularity at stake or not, we must not feel constrained to make decisions based on the influences of others. We should be free to make a positive stand. We have a mind and a will and we are ultimately responsible for the choice we make; which at times is easier said than done. These choices become easier if those responsible for us set great examples to be followed and we in turn do the same; but in the event they/we haven't been doing so or are not around, that must never be an excuse for jumping on the bandwagons that lead to just anywhere. Let us always strive to head somewhere; somewhere purposeful. The pull or strong lure to participate in what ultimately will not be to our best interest can be pushed away. "No thank you," with a genuine smile is still a respectable way to decline the unproductive offer(s). Many would not have gotten caught or scarred IF they had taken a moment to walk away or even turn the other cheek. For example, just think of the unnecessary arguments that could have been nipped in the bud. Some of them came disguised so subtly that 'going with the flow' could not be resisted. Then, what started out as a simple 'wave of opinions,' turned into a tsunami! As I would highlight repeatedly in workshops, 'No one can go back and change a bad beginning; but anyone can start NOW and create a successful ending.' NOW that you have been going with flow of what has been written in this article, who can YOU share this information with? Maybe those persons would be willing to share it with others causing a positive ripple effect. It can even be the start of a 'peaceful flow' that is unstoppable when the negative influences or situations present themselves. Most importantly, be inspired and do what comes to your heart that is in the best interest of yourself and others. Okay, at this point, I'll just leave you to go with the flow!
