As promised in last week’s debut of The Libero, the gieMAGAZINE brings to you all the action from the opening day of the 2012 BGTT Secondary Schools’ Football League. Matches were played in the North, South and East zones with last year’s dominators coming out on top. In the North zone, the Westmoorings Tigers secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Queen’s Royal College with goals coming from Kiel Pierre, Shaquille Long and one of the few players who remained from last season, Jonathon Cruickshank. In the other match that was played in the north zone, Mucurapo East Secondary defeated Fatima College by a two goal margin. On to the Southland, league leaders Shiva Boys’ Hindu College came up 3-0 winners over Pleasantville Secondary courtesy national midfielder Nathaniel Garcia (who scored a hat-trick on the night). Man of the match and national Under-20 goalkeeper, Quesi Weston, impressed fans with several splendid saves.

Team captain, Tevin Peters expressed his delight after the game stating, “I was pleased with the performance of the team and their determination to produce the victory. Our efforts from the training field definitely show that we are a tough team to beat this season. I hope that this season we can continue working as one unit and bring as many victories as possible so we can finish on top of the tables in the south zone and move on to the Big 5 tournament and win the Intercol.” In the other south zone match, runners up Presentation College defeated Naparima College by three goals to nil. While in the East, both matches had similar results. The first match of a double header held at the Larry Gomes Stadium saw Arima North Secondary and St. Augustine Secondary end up with a draw. The second match between El Dorado West Secondary and San Juan North Secondary ended in the same fashion. Look out next week for all the Secondary schools football league news with yours truly! Good luck teams!
