The findings of the latest Nacta poll relative to the Caribbean Airlines controversy is a clear vindication of line Minister Jack Warner. Asked if they agree with how the CAL controversy was being handled, 34 per cent of respondents said yes, 31 per cent said no, 35 per cent said they are not sure, with many asking for more information about the controversy.
More importantly, respondents said that the line minister should exercise control over the board and that he should be made aware of what was happening. After weeks of publicly embarrassing the minister, it is refreshing to know that the people are behind him. Warner is clearly the most popular government official and people regard him as a significant asset in our quest to right the wrongs in the land.
I remain troubled though that an expert opinion was asked on the safety of the aircraft at the centre of the controversy, when the issue has nothing to do with the aircraft contract and has more to do with issues of corporate governance and accepted principles of the relationship between statutory bodies and the Corporation Sole.
The board has cleverly shifted focus from itself as a runaway train lacking in political etiquette and unto the insignificant issue of "which is the safer plane." This Government has to discipline this board now. It cannot become distracted. Listen to the poll, Madame Prime Minister. Warner is right. The people have spoken and you have a penchant for chanting "the voice of the people is the voice of God."
