An open suggestion to the mayor of Port-of-Spain, Louis Lee Sing, if this falls under his jurisdiction: Just as you want to control the times during which alcohol can be publicly consumed, by restricting the hours of trade of the bars etc, why not look at the inconsiderate use of fireworks during the Yuletide season? Why must residents have to put up with the noise of fireworks at all hours of the night for any number of nights? Why not limit the times during which fireworks can be used, for example between 8 and 10 pm on Christmas Eve and between 11.30 pm and 12.30 am on Old Year's Night?
Think of the elderly, babies and young children (and animals) who have to put up with the noise at all hours of the night. Why must people be discharging fireworks in residential areas after 1.30 am on New Year's Day? I personally witnessed what can only be described as a lagniappe display at 2 am from a house in Petit Valley.
As you would have observed, the fireworks being sold now are no "Mickey Mouse" fireworks and much louder than what was available a few years ago. Is there no limit as to what can be imported and sold? You think this is allowed in any First World country? Check it out, Mr Mayor. I am confident that you will do something about this problem before it gets worse.
