A month ago nearly everybody was crying "no one is above the law" as we all vilified Police Service Commission boss Nizam Mohammed for "pulling rank" on two police officers. Now we seem to have either changed our minds or become mute because of the action of the police to bar a rhythm section from playing on the St James main road at the funeral of "Smokey" Ricardo McKenzie. The reaction from his family and friends has been to condemn the police while the rest of us have remained silent.
The truth is that no one is above the law and if Nizam Mohammed was wrong then so too are the family and friends of McKenzie. They were breaking the law. They could have consulted with the police beforehand. Another thing is when Minister Glenn Ramadharsingh returned from abroad two weeks ago and was given a rhythmic welcome by a tassa side at Piarco Airport, the Airports Authority put an immediate stop to "rolling up d tassa." No one objected to that but now they are quick to condemn the police in St James.
