Being a fatman myself, I bemoan the absolute absence of suitably girthed characters bestriding the cricket world with their infectious wit and bubbly enthusiasm. I mean to say, the world's first cricketing superstar, WG Grace, had a waist like a samaan tree while over the years we have been treated to a host of calorifically challenged stars like Colin Milburn, Richard De Souza, Eddie Hemmings, Sylvester Clarke and, of course, the most recent, Dwayne Leverock of Bermuda.
All of the above were characters of note with outgoing, outsize personalities to go with their athletic talents.
Now, compare these entertainers with today's cricketing headliners, who are typified by England batsman Kevin Peterson. From all accounts, whatever time he can spare from the adornment of his person he devotes to a lack of high scores. Looking at the current World Cup, even the Holland players look like cage fighters and I'm sure their personalities match. Give me a Colin Milburn century any day.
