In every sphere of life and activity boundaries need to be set, as without those things spin out of control and we end up with the lawlessness that passes for life in T&T today. What are the boundaries for calypso? Who sets them? The law? The calypso judges? The people? The song sung by Cro Cro that has earned him a spot in the Calypso Monarch finals must have pleased the judges, whoever they may be. But it does not please me and as a member of "the people" I will speak out.
That song is a vile, debasing, openly racial rant and my question is this: If that song is allowed to be rewarded (appearance fee and God forbid the $2 million first prize), where will the next calypso go? Who is to set the bound-aries? I suppose the people slandered can seek redress via the courts, but what do we say to the children listening?
It is being played openly on the airwaves. What does this say about us Trinidadians/Tobagonians to the rest of the Caribbean and to the world that we are seeking to convince that this is a paradise and our Carnival is the greatest show on Earth? My request to the powers-that-be is please black out that song on Dimanche Gras night when the show is being streamed "live" via the World Wide Web.
