It has always been rumoured that there is a glass ceiling in the police service beyond which Indo-Trini officers cannot rise. The expectations of young Indo-Trini officers were always limited to the rank of inspector. It was a rare sight for an Indo-Trini to be promoted beyond the rank of inspector. That was the case when I left the police service in 1990.
I am amazed to see that nothing much has changed some 21 years later. It reminds me of "the more things change the more they remain the same." I left Trinidad and am now gainfully employed in New York City Police Department, where I am treated with dignity and equality.
