Many reasons have been proffered for the spate of road fatalities, such as alcohol, tiredness, cell phones, lack of barriers, bad roads, colour blindness etc. To these can be added speeding, irresponsible driving, sensitivity of power steering in modern cars, power-to-weight ratio in modern cars, buying of licences, recklessness etc.
I am putting this state of affairs squarely on the shoulders of the driver's lack of responsibility. We as a people are predisposed to vehicular accidents by our culture of partying and drinking all night and then speeding home in the wee hours of the morning. We are also predisposed because of our inconsiderate and disrespectful driving habits. Our bad attitude and selfish nature make us believe that the road is there for us alone, and we must get to our destination ahead of everyone else.
The truth be told, we are a nation of road hogs who resort to obscene language if anyone dares to question our actions. We need to take our responsibilities as drivers more seriously and improve our driving habits, if our situation is to be changed for the better.
