Open letter to Community De-velopment Minister Nizam Baksh: Unquestionably, the Geriatric Adolescent Partnership Programme is a comfort zone for families who need this kind of service to take care of the elderly.
I have been reading about the complaints from the caregivers. I utilised this service about three years ago for my ill mother, and while there may have been changes I would like to share my observations:
The person in charge for the north appeared to be swamped by numerous calls for assistance. It was indeed difficult to contact her for follow-up.
The sum of $1,800 monthly was indeed low and problems did arise regarding late payment of salary to the caregiver. I supplemented this "stipend" by paying my mom's caregiver an additional $400 weekly.
Nobody from the ministry ever visited my mom's home to check on the progress of the caregiver. I signed a feedback form.
I was very satisfied with my mom's caregiver-a really dedicated single mother from Febeau Village, San Juan. However, other families have told me about the immaturity and uncaring attitude of their caregivers.
I am confident you can revamp the programme and transform its delivery service for the benefit of all stakeholders.
