I wonder if the Eco Warriors or the minister responsible for the environment has taken cognisance of the habitat loss which will occur with the construction of the highway to Point Fortin and the proposed tunnel through the Northern Range? In the case of the highway, this loss could amount to approximately 400 acres. Added to this is the possibly even greater loss of habitat when the Northern Range project is done.
While it is agreed that these roadways are necessary for development, I am hoping the Eco Warriors group and every school child and every citizen lobby the Government to conserve four-five times the area that will be lost to these and similar projects. Also, that in the contracts for all future projects where forests, open areas, wetlands and green spaces will be utilised for construction, consideration be given to the acreages lost, which must be added to already protected areas or created as new protected areas.
