My baby was transferred to the neonatal icu ward of the San Fernando General Hospital immediately after birth on March 4, due to breathing complications and a severe infection. The prompt response of the doctors and nurses there impressed me. He was immediately placed in an incubator and given the necessary treatment for him to survive. The doctors were always very helpful and willing to answer any question or concern that I had. The nurses were always attentive to my son and by extension all those other babies who were fighting for their lives. There was never a time that these babies were left without proper supervision of the nurses or doctors. Furthermore, the sterile and well sanitised environment gave me the most comfortable and confident feeling that he was in good hands.
My son was warded at the time when all the turmoil was taking place at the maternity ward and only the negative aspects were being highlighted. However, what was most noticeable to me was that numerous babies who were in the neonatal ward were cared for and discharged to smiling parents daily, further emphasising the kind of expert medical care and treatment that was being given to these little ones.
My husband and I waited 12 days before our son was discharged after numerous tests and examinations were done to ensure his health was where it should be. We left the hospital feeling confident that the job was well done. I say hats off to Dr Roberts, Dr John, the interns, the nurses and all the other staff of the neonatal unit for doing such a wonderful job caring for and restoring my baby and all the others back to perfect health.
