I was listening to a radio programme on Tuesday during which Housing Minister Roodal Moonilal replied to statements made by Senator Fitzgerald Hinds. In response to Hinds' call for Food and Nutrition Minister Vasant Bharath to resign over his "adversarial position" on collective responsibility in the Cabinet, Moonilal suggested that Hinds "relax and have a trim."
Moonilal is well aware of the significance of Hinds' hairstyle, having shared the Parliament with him for many years. One wonders what would have been Moonilal's position if Hinds suggested that Bharath "relax and eat a beef roti," or that Nizam Mohammed, instead of causing commotion, should "relax over a nice ham sandwich."
Picong is one thing and we've all grown accustomed to it, but what the minister said on the radio was downright distasteful and willfully disrespectful. He could have chosen to say anything else.
