Open letter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Surujrattan Rambachan:
What is really taking place in our consulate in New York? In October 2010 the consul general, Dr Harold Robertson, was forced to resign; there was no replacement. A very young and inexperienced Foreign Service Officer 1 was asked to take up the reigns at that mission. She did well, I must admit. Now I understand she was ordered to return to Port-of-Spain. There is now no foreign service officer at the busiest foreign mission. The immigration section is swamped with T&T nationals having to wait two years, sometimes more, to apply for a passport.
I can fully understand why the long wait, but we can do better. There is only one immigration officer to service over 200,000 disgruntled T&T nationals, and they can be a pain in the you know where. I wish Dr Keith Rowley or another opposition MP would investigate what is taking place at that consulate. This PP Government is treating the staff and the T&T nationals in New York as though they do not exist. The consulate is being run by people from New York. Do something somebody, because this Government doesn't really care.
