The picture of PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar and MP Anil Roberts in a sari and kurta, respectively, is a beautiful example of why our country is a special place on Earth. It lifted my spirits and warmed my heart. It also made me realise the conspicuous and notable absence of Arts and Multiculturalism Minister Winston Peters who did not take advantage of the opportunity to make an important multicultural fashion statement.
If anyone should be wearing a kurta on the eve of Indian Arrival Day celebrations, I would have thought it would be the Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism. Indeed, Peters has absented himself from all major Indian cultural events. This is embarrassing to the PP Government and, indeed, the UNC base. This fact dawned on me when I saw the PM lead a team of ministers onto the stage for the climax of last year's Divali Nagar (the final night). Peters was not there.
Last week I attended the Maha Sabha's Indian Arrival Day function at Crowne Plaza and Peters was absent. Whether it is Phawga, Divali, Pichakaaree or Indian Arrival Day, Mr Multiculturalism continues to snob the Indo-Trini community. Perhaps PM Persad-Bissessar should re-evaluate the suitability of Peters for this ministry and consider appointing someone who may be a little more sensitive to other sections in our society. Ministers Emmanuel George and Anil Roberts appear to be politically savvy.
