The decision by Port-of-Spain Mayor Louis Lee Sing to forbid parking in the King George V park is long overdue. The park is heavily utilised all week. Each time there has been parking or fetes thrown there is damage caused by the vehicles driving over the soil surface. The soil is severely impacted and uneven over the entire park. There is no longer a uniform type of grass growing over the surface instead the grass is a mix of weeds.
Further to this, there is always a serious litter problem afterwards with many glass bottles which are subsequently broken by the vehicles driving over them. As a result the broken bottles become embedded in the soil and pose a hazard to users. The reality is that the majority of parking users dirty inconsiderate litterers. No effort is ever made to rehabilitate the park after these abuses by the fete promoters or cricket organisers.
