I am happy to see that Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has not repeated the political mistakes of her political guru, former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday. When Panday was elected Prime Minister, he apparently took a deliberate decision not to pursue political corruption by the PNM because, it is said, he did not think he should rock the boat.
This is believed to be informed in part by the fact that he was the first Indo-Trinidadian to hold the office of Prime Minister and he wanted to circumvent the destabilising cry of political victimisation in a radically charged political atmosphere. For this he paid the ultimate political price, as he lost office because he did not vindicate the population's concerns about the massive political corruption that occurred under the PNM.
The PNM of course did not return the favour and relentlessly pursued him when the tables were turned.
Persad-Bissessar is a confident leader and her decision to pursue political corruption would guarantees her Government's political future. Kudos to you, madam.
