Some time ago, a policeman told me that I shouldn't tell him how to do his job. He'd been directing traffic, barehanded, at dusk, around an obstacle on the road into Cascade. He was about 25 yards away gesticulating frantically, but I couldn't tell whether he was stopping me or calling me on, so I told him that he should have a red sign for "stop" and a green sign for "go." He was quite annoyed.
Recently, under a grey sky, at the corner of Abercromby and Independence Square, a slim policewoman in a dark uniform became equally annoyed because I didn't stop when she signalled me.I didn't even see her. There was so much going on that it was easy to miss her small dark figure. That's how people get run over. She should at least have been wearing an orange safety vest. Growing up abroad, I remember when policemen directing traffic wore bright, white gloves. Now I know why.
