I am ashamed at the behaviour of a handful of people at the Emancipation Day march who were so concerned about scoring cheap political points that they disrespected the invocation call to our African ancestors. I have no problem with political picong but feel that we must respect and honour our traditions and teachings.
The offering of water and the symbolic purification is an important part of our African heritage and ceremony. Personal political attacks by a few unruly people destroyed the sanctity of the moment and I find this to be selfish and inconsiderate. We cannot celebrate emancipation if we do not understand and respect our African culture and tradition.
