My otherwise joyous emancipation celebration was marred by one stupid act.I took my two children, ages seven and 10, to witness the emancipation procession for the first time. I arrived early and got a good spot on Independence Square.I was identifying the government ministers present to my son (who has to learn key public officials for his social studies at school) when I heard a woman hurl the most vile and obscene insults at these ministers.
This woman was old enough to be my children's grandmother but had no respect for the children in our midst, far less government ministers. I was forced to move when she started referring to certain parts of her anatomy. I am extremely disappointed that our police could allow such behaviour.A rare day out with my children was spoilt. What was meant to be a happy occasion was soured by this foolish and uncouth behaviour. I left early wondering if we are truly emancipated.
