While I'm sure there is a logical explanation why we still use coins (small change) in our currency, I would like the relevant authorities to make it clear to the population. To be honest, and I'm sure many will agree with me, the use of coins in T&T is a nuisance to say the least. No longer can we (or dare I say should we) give a five, 10 or even 25 cent piece to a beggar without being looked at with scorn and surprise. "Boss whey yuh want me buy with that?" Some vagrants refuse to take it.
What in this country costs five, 10 or even 25 cents? Even a dollar is not acceptable to some beggars, as they would take it with one hand and stick out the other for more. After all, what can a dollar buy? In some places you get two power mints for that. So why the coins? They only collect in a bowl on your table at home, and then you have to go to the bank to convert it to notes, because most vendors don't want to take $5 in coins. We no longer have vending machines that require the use of coins on a large scale, neither do taxi drivers give coins as change. So what's the explanation? Is it not a cost to the country that could be avoided?
