Looking at the TV news Saturday night on the flood damage in the West, I saw where Minister of Works Jack Warner was once again talking about bringing laws to prevent the indiscriminate cutting of the hillsides. Well it's about time Warner stops talking and starts doing something about this menace which contributes to our flooding problems.
The minister also informed that the wall outside Country Club in Maraval that fell because of the water, will have to be rebuild at a cost of nearly $1.5 million. This may very well turn out be the most expensive wall in the country. Since the trend right now is for commissions of enquiry, it may be an appropriate time to have one on the construction of this wall.
From the pictures on both television and in the press it appears that very little, if any at all, steel was used in its construction, and there seems to have been no irrigation or weep holes in the wall.Perhaps Afra Raymond, who is spending lots of time with the Invaders Bay issue, should dedicate some of his time to the local construction industry and its standards.
