Military state can be in T&T’s future

The condemnation by the Prime Minister, Attorney General and others of the actions of the Anti Corruption Investigations Bureau (ACIB) is definitely warranted. From my perspective, the public has not heard from the ACIB at all for the last two years or so. Under the PNM, it was very active, but now it almost seems as if it is non-existent. Why has no action been taken on Udecott, the Landate matter, T&TEC, URP, and so many others that the AG has mentioned? The Fraud Squad operates swiftly and quietly without fear or favour. It has numerous cases and manages them as best as it can with limited resources. On the other hand the ACIB deals with only what appears to be “high-profile” cases, which are few. Yet there are problems in properly progressing a case. What appears to be a spat between the Integrity Commission members, leaked to the press, has become a criminal investigation.

Many investigations, as mentioned before, have stalled within the ACIB because the officers are not acting. Why are they not acting? It appears to me that while the People’s Partnership is in Government, the PNM controls the Police Service or at the very least some officers are loyal to the Opposition party. These are serious allegations but there appears to be mounting evidence given the actions of the various arms of the service. How can one explain the assassination plot, the countless attacks on the foreign Commissioner of Police and now this matter? It all appears to be a calculated attempt to embarrass the Government. The Government has to also be aware that there is a power mightier that itself and must guard against it. That’s the power of the army and police. I would not be surprised if at some point in the future we wake up one morning as a military state.
