T&T soca stars dominate next month’s awards list
Soca heavyweights Machel Montano, Kerwin DuBois and Benjai (Rodney Le Blanc) are among local artistes vying for the coveted Soca Song of the Year at this year's International Soca Awards. The event, now in its tenth year, will be held at the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, California, on June 29.
Other nominees include Patrice Roberts (featuring DuBois), Edwin Yearwood (Barbados) and Hyper Sounds (Barbados). Competing for Soca Chutney Song of the Year are Destra & Rikki Jai, KI, Raymond Ramnarine (featuring Sam Boodram), Artie Butkoon, Rick Ramoutar and Ragga & Kavita Maharajh (New York).
A new entry this year is the Nigerian Soca category, which has four nominees. President of the International Soca Awards Organisation (SAO), Colin Jackman, said hosting the gala event in Hollywood would be a step in the right direction for soca and has the potential to open doors for soca artistes and T&T entertainers.
Jackman, who spoke yesterday in a telephone interview from the US, said while preparations for the ceremony were “coming along” he was still awaiting word from Arts and Multiculturalism Minister Winston Peters on whether the SAO committee would receive the $5 million it had requested to stage the show.
He said: “When we last spoke, he said that he had to take it to Cabinet, so I hope to hear from him no later than today (yesterday). “But at this point, we are focusing on the nominees and T&T dominates the list again this year.” Jackman said the committee was working out how to send local artistes to the star-studded show as many of them were already booked for local and foreign shows.
“We are looking at it and deciding on how we are going about doing it. We also asked the minister if he could have helped us with this, so we’re still waiting on him to let us know how to proceed,” he added. Last year, the awards, which took place at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) in Port-of-Spain, received poor reviews from the media and the show was described as sub-standard by many who attended.
Jackman said the Hollywood affair would be one to remember, as T&T would be in the international spotlight. The Soca Awards is being promoted in the US as the premier event to mark the start of celebrations for T&T’s 50th anniversary of independence.
Preceding the awards ceremony will be a red-carpet event and pre-show, showcasing soca, calypso, steelpan, tassa and Carnival portrayals. Among those who are being honoured this year include Calypso Rose, Brian MacFarlane, Machel Montano, Rikki Jai and Black Stalin.
