If speeding tragedies are the reason for erecting barriers, we may save huge sums by following the example of Jamaica and more advanced countries. The radar speed gun, which also gives pictures of number plate and vehicle, has been very effective in controlling speed and accidents. What strikes one as most remarkable is that Jamaica, a country that for over 70 years has been less financially able than T&T, has been using these guns for over 20 years and we haven't armed ourselves yet.
The gun is an immediate and long-term solution to our problem if used efficiently and with zero tolerance. As an additional benefit, the population will lose much of its lackadaisical attitude towards the law. Of course, all these benefits depend on the prompt passing of relevant laws, quality management of the police and the absence of the forgiving exceptions we love to apply. To deal with the immediate increase in cases, night court may be necessary as well as computerising and sharing of information with all relevant centres.
