That’s a hard nut to crack, Mr Mayor
Other Port-of-Spain mayors before Louis Lee Sing have tried to do something about vending problems in the city without success. Lee Sing himself has tried to regulate downtown fruit vendors and food vendors on Ariapita Avenue. Now he is going after coconut vendors around the Savan- nah. My own feeling is that the mayor is not going to get very far with this because, as was pointed out in the Guardian’s editorial on Saturday, it is unfair and probably illegal to impose a fee on those coconut vendors only. What about the other vendors operating freely? And even if a licence fee were to be imposed on all vendors, there is certain to be many who will refuse to pay but continue to operate freely. Vending is going to continue to be a difficult problem to overcome.
